Edwards and O'Neil are two of the initial names under consideration to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The previous coach was sacked on Sunday following the team's 10-match without a victory start to the Premier League season.

And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic associations to the team - are among the options to be considered by the club leadership.

The manager is currently at another club, which would create a potential obstacle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.

However the former Luton head coach - who played more than 100 of games for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a leading contender for the vacancy.

The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys support from the club directors as they begin the process of hiring a new manager.

O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, even though he would be a surprising appointment given he was sacked by Wolves in the previous winter.

The ex- West Ham midfielder is out of work which means Wolves would not be required to provide any compensation.
